In this class we will be working on two different paintings; a portrait and a figure focusing on composition. Using wood as a substrate we apply paper collage and fabric and paint with acrylics, gesso, inks and pastels. I also have a video on how I paint my faces using gesso or white acrylic and inks.

This is a class about process and rather than replicate the paintings, I want you to discover your own unique style using the techniques and information I have supplied in this class.

One of the exercise projects is drawing shapes like circles and rectangles. I gather some images for inspiration and with a pencil, I switch within the defined space doodles or drawings inspired by these images. They don’t have to make sense other than focusing on the negative space created by the sketches.

In the final paintings I show you my process of really using mixed media to the fullest. Combining pastel with acrylic paint and watercolors. Mixing the charcoal in with the acrylics. I break the rules and it works for me. I hope you enjoy the exploration.
